The Path Undivided

The Star of Chaos: allegiance to all the Dark Gods, and to none

Chaos Undivided represents the most treacherous path of all within the service of the Chaos Gods, a knife's edge walked only by the most cunning and powerful champions who seek to harness the power of all four Ruinous Powers without becoming the pawn of any single god. Those who embrace this treacherous path refuse to pledge exclusive allegiance to Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle, or Slaanesh, instead drawing strength from all while serving none. This path offers tremendous potential, for the champion who succeeds can wield the martial fury of the Blood God, the sorcerous might of the Changer of Ways drawn from the Warp, the supernatural endurance of the Plague Lord, and the perfected skill of the Dark Prince—all without the limitations that come from serving a single patron.

Champions of the Undivided walk a knife’s edge between jealous gods

Yet this treacherous path demands perfect balance and constant vigilance, for the Chaos Gods are jealous masters who tolerate no divided loyalties. A warrior who accepts too many gifts from Khorne risks earning the wrath of Slaanesh, while one who indulges in excess may provoke the rage of the Blood God. The champion of this treacherous path must play the Great Game themselves, balancing offerings and victories among all four dark powers, ensuring that no single god feels slighted while extracting maximum benefit from each. This requires cunning that would impress Tzeentch, endurance that would satisfy Nurgle, martial skill that Khorne respects, and refined manipulation that Slaanesh appreciates.
The rewards for those who master this perilous path are immense—power drawn from all aspects of Chaos, daemonic gifts from multiple sources, and freedom from the tyrannical demands of any single god. Where followers of Khorne cannot employ sorcery and servants of Tzeentch may lack martial prowess, champions of this treacherous path suffer no such limitations. They can summon daemons from all four dark powers, wield blessed weapons from multiple Chaos Gods, and command Chaos Cults dedicated to varied patrons. This versatility makes them among the most dangerous adversaries the Empire faces, unpredictable foes who can adapt to any challenge.
Yet for every champion who succeeds in the service of Chaos Undivided, countless others fail catastrophically. The Chaos Gods view such practitioners as useful tools in the Great Game, pieces to be sacrificed when convenient. Those who displease their patrons or fail to maintain the delicate balance are often transformed into mindless Chaos Spawn, their bodies and minds twisted beyond recognition as punishment for their presumption. Others find themselves betrayed by one god to serve another's purposes, their carefully maintained equilibrium shattered in an instant. The path of this treacherous path is one that few can walk and even fewer can master, but for those with sufficient strength of will and cunning, it offers power that rivals the greatest champions of any single dark god.

Philosophy & Treacherous Balance

The Great Game made war: offerings of victory to every dark power

The philosophy of this treacherous path centers on the belief that true power comes not from submission to a single patron but from mastery over all sources of Chaos. Champions who walk this path view the exclusive devotees of Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle, or Slaanesh as slaves to their gods, limited by the narrow focus that single-god worship imposes. In contrast, followers of this treacherous path see themselves as masters of their own destiny, wielding the Chaos Gods as tools rather than submitting as servants. This arrogance is not entirely unfounded, for history has shown that the greatest threats to the Empire have often come from those who served this treacherous path rather than pledging allegiance to a single dark power.

Warriors of rival gods united by cunning and conquest

The practical application of this treacherous path philosophy requires constant diplomacy among entities that exist as eternal rivals. A champion must offer victories to Khorne through conquest while also weaving schemes that please Tzeentch, spreading plagues that honor Nurgle, and pursuing perfection that satisfies Slaanesh. Each god must receive their due without any feeling that they receive less than their rivals. This is an impossible balance to maintain indefinitely, yet the most successful champions of this treacherous path have managed it for centuries or even millennia, playing the Chaos Gods against each other with such skill that the dark powers themselves cannot break free from the web of manipulation.
The greatest advantage of this treacherous path lies in its unpredictability and versatility. Where a champion of Khorne is predictable in their rage-fueled assaults and a devotee of Tzeentch relies primarily on sorcery, followers of this treacherous path can employ any tactic that serves their purpose. They might lead a blood-soaked charge worthy of the Blood God one day, then execute a labyrinthine plot that would make the Changer of Ways proud the next. This tactical flexibility makes them extraordinarily dangerous, able to adapt to any enemy and exploit any weakness. Chaos Space Marines who serve this treacherous path often lead the most successful Black Crusades, drawing upon warbands dedicated to different Chaos Gods and uniting them under a single banner.
Yet the dangers of this treacherous path are ever-present and grow worse with every passing year. The Chaos Gods tolerate such independence only so long as it serves the Great Game, and they possess infinite patience to wait for the moment when a champion's usefulness expires. Many who thought themselves masters of this treacherous path have discovered too late that they were merely pawns in schemes far vaster than they could comprehend, their every choice manipulated by Tzeentch, their every victory feeding Khorne, their every setback pleasing Nurgle, and their every ambition serving Slaanesh. The path of this treacherous path may offer freedom from a single master, but it ultimately leads to enslavement by all four—a fate arguably worse than devotion to any single dark god.

Champions of the Undivided Path

Horus: mightiest champion of the Undivided, and its gravest warning

The history of this treacherous path is written in the deeds of champions whose names echo through the ages as both warnings and inspirations to those who would walk the treacherous path. The greatest of these was Horus Lupercal, Warmaster of the Emperor of Mankind and favored son among the Primarchs, who embraced all the Chaos Gods in his campaign to overthrow the Empire during the legendary Horus Heresy. Horus Lupercal wielded power from Khorne to enhance his already formidable combat prowess, accepted gifts from Tzeentch to foresee the Emperor of Mankind's defenses, drew upon Nurgle's resilience to survive mortal wounds, and embraced Slaanesh's perfection to refine his strategic genius. For a time, he seemed unstoppable, his rebellion nearly succeeding in toppling the greatest empire humanity had ever known.

Abaddon bows to no single god, yet wields the gifts of all four

Yet even Horus Lupercal, mightiest of all Primarchs save the Emperor of Mankind himself, ultimately fell victim to the very powers he sought to master. The Chaos Gods used him as a weapon in their eternal Great Game, each feeding him just enough power to serve their purposes while denying him the independence he believed he possessed. In the final battle aboard the Vengeful Spirit, Horus faced the Emperor of Mankind not as a free being but as a puppet of Chaos Undivided, his will completely subsumed by the competing influences of all four dark gods. The Emperor of Mankind's victory came at terrible cost—the Master of Mankind mortally wounded and confined to the Golden Throne—but it demonstrated that even the strongest champion of this treacherous path remains ultimately a slave to the Chaos Gods.
In the ten thousand years since the Horus Heresy, one name has risen above all others in the service of Chaos Undivided: Abaddon the Despoiler, Warmaster of Chaos and master of the Black Legion. Unlike his mentor Horus Lupercal, Abaddon has maintained his independence through sheer force of will, refusing to kneel fully to any of the Chaos Gods while accepting their blessings when it serves his purposes. He has launched thirteen Black Crusades from the Eye of Terror, each one a calculated strike against the Empire that feeds all four dark gods while enslaving Abaddon to none. His greatest achievement—the creation of the Great Rift that split the galaxy in two—demonstrates that this treacherous path remains viable for those with sufficient cunning and strength.
Beyond these legendary figures, countless other champions have attempted the path of Chaos Undivided, with varying degrees of success. Some Chaos Space Marines lead warbands that draw upon warriors dedicated to different Chaos Gods, uniting them through force of personality and promise of conquest. Others are lone champions who accept gifts from all four dark powers, their bodies bearing the marks of multiple patrons—a tribute to Khorne's rage, Tzeentch's mutation, Nurgle's disease, and Slaanesh's perfection. Yet for every champion who rises to prominence, hundreds more fall into madness or transformation into Chaos Spawn, their ambition exceeding their ability to balance the competing demands of the Chaos Gods. The path of this treacherous path offers supreme power, but only to those rare individuals who possess the cunning to play the Great Game themselves.
