The Imperium of Mankind

Upon the Golden Throne abides the eternal will of the Emperor.

++ REF.M42.HORUS-RESURGENT — UNCONFIRMED ++++ TITHE ASSESSMENT: SEGMENTUM SOLAR ++++ ASTRONOMICAN STABILITY: NOMINAL ++

Introduction

The Imperium of Mankind is a galaxy-spanning theocratic, fascist, and authoritarian civilization comprised of over one million inhabited worlds and trillions of human subjects. Founded by the Emperor of Mankind during the Great Crusade in the 30th millennium, the Imperium has endured over 10,000 years of constant warfare, decay, and despair.

The vast bureaucracy that governs a million worlds

From Terra, humanity's homeworld, the God-Emperor of Mankind rules from his Golden Throne, maintaining the Astronomican that enables navigation through the Warp. His vast bureaucracy, commanded by the Adeptus Terra, administers an empire so gigantic that communication between its extremes can take decades or even centuries.
The Imperium is a civilization in constant decline, plagued by corruption, ignorance, superstition, and xenophobia. Its citizens live under a totalitarian regime where deviation from Imperial orthodoxy is punished by death. Despite its decadence, the Imperium remains the only significant barrier against the forces of Chaos, hostile Xenos, and other threats lurking in the darkness of space.
In the current era, known as the Era Indomitus, the galaxy has been scarred by the Great Rift—a massive warp storm that has divided Imperial space in two. Yet even in this darkest hour, humanity endures through faith, duty, and the unbreakable will to survive. The return of Primarch Roboute Guilliman has brought new hope and the introduction of Primaris Space Marines, marking a potential turning point in humanity's struggle for existence in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium.

The Emperor's forces unite Terra during the Unification Wars

The history of humanity spans over 25,000 years, encompassing six great eras that have shaped the destiny of our species in the galaxy. From the technological golden age through the darkness of Old Night, humanity rose from the ashes of Terra to conquer a million worlds. A devastating civil war nearly destroyed this emerging civilization, but it managed to survive and evolve into the vast theocratic empire we know today.
The earliest period, known as the Dark Age of Technology (M15-M25), witnessed humanity reach its technological pinnacle during an unprecedented golden age of discovery and expansion. Advanced artificial intelligence, Standard Template Constructs, and sophisticated warp travel technology allowed human civilization to spread across the galaxy with remarkable speed and efficiency. During this era, peaceful coexistence with various alien races was common, and humanity lived in an age of prosperity and scientific advancement that would never again be matched.
However, this golden age came to a catastrophic end during the Age of Strife, also called Old Night (M25-M30), when human civilization collapsed into five thousand years of darkness and despair. Massive warp storms swept across the galaxy, isolating human worlds from each other and cutting off vital communications. Artificial intelligences rebelled against their creators, alien races turned hostile, and human space became a battlefield of internal conflicts and social collapse.

Space Marines leading humanity's conquest of the stars

From this chaos emerged the Emperor of Mankind, an immortal being of immense psychic power who had secretly guided humanity throughout history. Revealing Himself during Terra's darkest hour, He unified the homeworld and launched the Great Crusade (M30-M31), the most ambitious military campaign in human history. Leading genetically-enhanced Space Marine Legions commanded by His superhuman sons, the Primarchs, the Emperor of Mankind reclaimed scattered human worlds and established the secular Imperial Truth.
This dream was shattered by the Horus Heresy (M31), when the Emperor of Mankind's most beloved son fell to Chaos corruption and turned against his father. Half the Space Marine Legions followed Horus Lupercal into rebellion, devastating human space in a seven-year civil war. Though the Emperor of Mankind defeated Horus Lupercal, He was mortally wounded and had to be placed upon the Golden Throne to preserve His life and maintain the Astronomican.
Through millennia of gradual decline, the Imperium transformed into a theocratic state worshipping the Emperor of Mankind as a god. Despite constant threats from Chaos, aliens, and internal corruption, the Imperium endures through faith and bureaucracy. Recently, the Great Rift has divided the galaxy, but also brought the return of Primarch Roboute Guilliman and new hope in the Era Indomitus (M42).

The Emperor's finest warriors defending humanity

The Adeptus Astartes, known as Space Marines, are the Emperor of Mankind's finest warriors and humanity's greatest defenders. These genetically enhanced super-soldiers were created from the genetic template of the Emperor of Mankind himself, modified through a process involving twenty-one specialized organs called Gene-seed that transform ordinary humans into living weapons of unprecedented capability.

The next generation of Space Marines with enhanced capabilities

Organized into independent Chapters of approximately one thousand warriors each, the Space Marines operate as elite strike forces capable of undertaking missions that would be impossible for ordinary human soldiers. Each Chapter maintains its own distinct culture, combat doctrines, and heraldry, while adhering to the sacred Codex Astartes laid down by Roboute Guilliman. From recruitment to final battle, a Space Marine's existence is dedicated entirely to warfare and the protection of humanity.
The process of creating a Space Marines is both physically and spiritually demanding. Young recruits, typically chosen between the ages of ten and fourteen, must undergo years of brutal training, surgical implantation of Gene-seed organs, and psychological conditioning. Only a fraction survive to become full battle-brothers, but those who do possess strength, speed, and endurance far beyond mortal humans, clad in Power that further enhances their already formidable capabilities.
From the noble Ultramarines with their adherence to the Codex Astartes, to the savage Space Wolves who maintain their fierce tribal traditions, each Chapter serves as a beacon of hope in humanity's darkest hour. The Dark Angels hunt the Fallen Angels with relentless determination, while the Blood Angels struggle against the curse of their Gene-seed that drives them to both artistic beauty and berserker rage. The Imperial Fists fortify and defend, the Iron Hands embrace mechanical augmentation, and the Salamanders protect the innocent with their compassionate yet deadly approach to warfare.
The recent introduction of Primaris Space Marines has brought new strength to the Adeptus Astartes, equipped with enhanced Gene-seed, superior weapons, and improved armor. These new warriors represent the future of the Space Marines, standing even taller and stronger than their traditional brothers while maintaining the same unwavering dedication to the Emperor of Mankind and humanity.

The backbone of Imperial military might across a million worlds

The Astra Militarum, formerly known as the Imperial Guard, represents the backbone of the Imperium's military might and the largest fighting force in human history. Comprising trillions of soldiers drawn from countless worlds across the galaxy, the Astra Militarum embodies the principle that the Emperor of Mankind protects those who serve with faith, courage, and unwavering determination in the face of humanity's countless enemies.

Devastating firepower that defines Imperial Guard doctrine

Unlike the genetically enhanced Adeptus Astartes, the men and women of the Astra Militarum are ordinary humans who rely on discipline, training, superior numbers, and massive firepower to overcome their enemies. Each regiment reflects the unique culture, environment, and military traditions of its home world, creating a diverse tapestry of fighting forces that spans from desert raiders to jungle fighters, from ice-world veterans to Hive Worlds specialists.
The famous Cadia Shock Troops, now tragically displaced after the destruction of their Fortress Worlds, exemplified the disciplined, professional soldier that many other regiments aspire to emulate. The Catachan Jungle Fighters Jungle Fighters bring their Death Worlds survival skills and intimate knowledge of hostile environments to every battlefield. The Death Korps of Krieg offers fanatical devotion and willingness to sacrifice everything for victory, while the Steel Legion combines mechanized warfare with industrial efficiency.
Supported by an vast array of War Machines, from the reliable Leman Russ Battle Tanks to the mighty Baneblade super-heavy tank, from swift Chimera Transport to devastating Basilisk artillery pieces, the Astra Militarum wages war on a scale that dwarfs all other Imperial forces. Their doctrine emphasizes massed infantry assaults, overwhelming artillery barrages, and coordinated armored spearheads that can break the strongest enemy lines through sheer weight of fire and numbers.
Beyond their martial prowess, the Astra Militarum serves as the Imperium's primary tool for maintaining order across the galaxy. They garrison Fortress Worlds, suppress rebellions, defend against Xenos incursions, and stand as humanity's first and last line of defense against the horrors that threaten to consume civilization. In an age of darkness, they represent the common human spirit that refuses to yield to despair.

From these spires, the High Lords govern a million worlds

The Adeptus Terra is the central government of the Imperium, a vast bureaucracy that administers the galaxy's largest civilization from the sacred world of Terra. From the towering spires of the Imperial Palace, the High Lords of Terra oversee the countless departments and organizations that keep the Imperium functioning across a million worlds, managing an empire so enormous that its scope defies comprehension.
Established in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy as the Emperor of Mankind was entombed upon the Golden Throne, the Adeptus Terra represents the evolution of the Emperor of Mankind's original vision into a complex governmental structure capable of managing the largest human civilization in history. Each of its major organizations operates with semi-autonomous authority while remaining unified under the ultimate authority of the Golden Throne and the collective will of the High Lords.

The impossible task of administering the galaxy's largest empire

The Adeptus Administratum manages the impossible task of coordinating resources, tithes, communications, and logistics across vast interstellar distances where messages can take decades or centuries to reach their destinations. The Adeptus Arbites enforce Imperial law with unwavering brutality, ensuring that the Emperor of Mankind's justice reaches even the most remote worlds. The Adeptus Astronomica maintains the psychic beacon of the Astronomican, without which interstellar travel would be impossible.
The Adeptus Custodes serve as the Emperor of Mankind's personal guard, genetically enhanced warriors who surpass even Adeptus Astartes in their martial prowess and unwavering loyalty. The Adeptus Astra Telepathica controls and trains the psykers whose abilities are essential for communication and navigation, while the Officio Assassinorum provides the Imperium's most precise and deadly surgical weapons against its enemies.
The Council of the High Lords of Terra stands as the supreme governing body of the Imperium, composed of twelve of the most powerful individuals in human space. Each High Lord represents a different facet of Imperial power, from military might to religious authority, creating a system of checks and balances that has endured for millennia. The composition of the Council may change with circumstances and politics, but its fundamental role as the ultimate authority beneath the Emperor of Mankind remains constant, making decisions that affect the fate of entire sectors and billions of human souls.
Despite its massive scope and Byzantine complexity, the Adeptus Terra has proven remarkably resilient over ten millennia of constant crisis. It has adapted to survive Xenos invasions, Chaos incursions, technological failures, and internal corruption while maintaining the basic functions that keep human civilization from collapsing into chaos. Though slow, bureaucratic, and often inefficient, it remains the only institution capable of governing an empire spanning the galaxy.

The fusion of flesh and machine in service to the Omnissiah

The Adeptus Mechanicus are the guardians of sacred technology, a quasi-independent organization based on Mars that controls virtually all technical knowledge within the Imperium. They represent a unique fusion of religious devotion and scientific pursuit, venerating the Omnissiah—whom they believe to be a manifestation of the Emperor of Mankind—while maintaining the ancient Standard Template Constructs that allow the production of Imperial technology across the galaxy.

God-Machines that stride across battlefields like walking cathedrals

From their red-dust covered Forge Worlds, the Tech-Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus produce everything from simple las-weapon power packs to the mighty God-Machines known as Collegia Titanica that stride across battlefields like walking cathedrals of destruction. Their knowledge encompasses not only manufacturing, but also the maintenance, repair, and sacred rituals necessary to appease the machine-spirits that dwell within all technology.
The Tech-Priests themselves embody the fusion of flesh and machine that lies at the heart of their beliefs. Through progressive augmentation, they replace weak biological components with blessed mechanical parts, seeing this transformation as a path toward divine perfection. Senior Magos may retain little of their original human form, having become living embodiments of the Omnissiah's will, their consciousness distributed across multiple mechanical bodies and data-storage systems.
The military forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus, known as the Skitarii, are cybernetically enhanced soldiers who serve as the armed might of the Forge Worlds. These warriors blend human determination with mechanical precision, their enhanced bodies housing a variety of specialized weapons and sensory equipment. The Collegia Titanica operates the massive Titan Legions, while Explorator fleets venture into the unknown regions of space to rediscover lost technology and establish new Forge Worlds.
The sacred mysteries of the machine-Cult Mechanicus extend far beyond mere technological prowess, encompassing a complex theological framework that views technology as divine revelation made manifest. Each machine-spirit is considered a fragment of the Omnissiah's consciousness, requiring proper rituals of awakening, appeasement, and benediction to function correctly. This religious approach to technology has preserved much of humanity's technical knowledge through the dark ages, but has also created a conservative mindset that views innovation with suspicion and change as potential heresy against the sacred patterns established by their machine-god.
Despite their essential role in maintaining Imperial civilization, the Adeptus Mechanicus remains somewhat apart from the rest of the Imperium. Their pursuit of knowledge sometimes conflicts with Imperial orthodoxy, and their desire to recover lost technology can lead them into dangerous territory both literally and philosophically. Yet without their expertise, the Imperium would quickly collapse as its ancient technology failed beyond repair.

The militant arm of the Ecclesiarchy purging heresy with holy fire

The Adeptus Ministorum, also known as the Ecclesiarchy, is the Imperium's official church and one of its most powerful institutions, responsible for maintaining faith in the God-Emperor across millions of worlds and countless billions of human souls. This vast religious organization administers the Imperial Cult, ensures spiritual unity throughout human space, and wields immense political and military power through its various orders, institutions, and military arms.

Faith unites humanity across a million worlds in the Emperor's name

Founded in the centuries following the Horus Heresy as the Imperial Truth gave way to Emperor of Mankind worship, the Adeptus Ministorum has grown to become an institution rivaling even the Adeptus Terra in its scope and influence. From the Ecclesiarchal Palace on Terra to the humblest shrine world chapel, the Ministorum's priests, confessors, and missionaries spread the Emperor of Mankind's divine word and maintain the spiritual health of humanity.
The organization encompasses numerous specialized orders and institutions, from the Adepta Sororitas who serve as the Ecclesiarchy's military arm, to the missionary orders of the Missionarius Galaxia who venture into the darkest corners of the galaxy to bring the Emperor's light to lost human colonies. The Schola Progenium trains the orphans of Imperial servants to become some of the most loyal and dedicated servants of the Emperor of Mankind, while the High Clergy guides the spiritual life of entire sectors from positions of enormous power and influence.
The Imperial Cult itself represents one of humanity's few unifying forces in an age of darkness and division. Despite countless regional variations in practice and doctrine, the core belief in the Emperor of Mankind's divinity provides a common foundation that spans from the most civilized core worlds to the most primitive frontier settlements. This shared faith has proven capable of inspiring ordinary humans to extraordinary acts of courage and sacrifice in the Emperor of Mankind's name.
Yet the Adeptus Ministorum is not without its dangers and contradictions. The organization's immense power has led to corruption, fanaticism, and political maneuvering that sometimes serves personal ambition more than divine will. The Age of Apostasy stands as a stark reminder of what happens when the Ecclesiarchy's power goes unchecked, yet even these failures cannot diminish the essential role that faith plays in holding the Imperium together against the forces of darkness.
The Imperium spans over one million inhabited worlds, each classified according to its primary function and strategic importance to the galactic state, forming a vast tapestry of human civilization that encompasses every conceivable type of planetary environment and society. From the sacred Throneworld of Terra to the most remote frontier settlements, each world serves the Emperor of Mankind's grand design in its own way, contributing resources, manpower, or strategic value to humanity's greatest and most enduring civilization.

Vertical megacities housing billions in urban sprawl

Hive Worlds represent the ultimate expression of Imperial industrial civilization, massive urban planets where hundreds of billions of people live in towering arcology cities that stretch from the planet's surface to the upper atmosphere. These vertical megacities are marvels of human engineering and endurance, their populations working in vast Manufactorum and processing facilities that produce everything from basic consumer goods to advanced military equipment. Life in the hives is harsh and stratified, with the wealthy occupying the upper spires while the masses toil in the darkness of the Underhive.
Agri Worlds are dedicated entirely to agricultural production, their entire planetary surfaces converted into vast farms and food processing facilities designed to feed the Imperium's countless populations. These worlds represent efficiency on a scale that defies imagination, their carefully managed ecosystems producing enough food to sustain entire sectors while their populations live lives dedicated to the sacred duty of feeding the Emperor of Mankind's subjects. Many Agri Worlds maintain ancient farming traditions passed down through millennia, while others employ advanced technology to maximize their agricultural output.
Death Worlds are hostile environments that produce some of the Imperium's finest warriors and most resilient populations, their brutal conditions forging humans capable of surviving in the harshest environments the galaxy can offer. From poison-atmosphere planets to worlds dominated by carnivorous ecosystems, from ice-locked frozen wastelands to volcanic hellscapes, these worlds create populations whose survival instincts and combat skills make them invaluable recruits for the Astra Militarum and other Imperial organizations.
Fortress Worlds serve as heavily fortified defensive positions that guard vital sectors, Warp routes, and strategic resources, their entire planetary infrastructure dedicated to military defense and the projection of Imperial power. These bastions against the Imperium's enemies feature massive defensive installations, orbital defense platforms, and garrison forces that can repel the most determined attacks while serving as bases for offensive operations into hostile territory.

The Emperor's personal guard, perfection incarnate in golden armor

The Adeptus Custodes represent the pinnacle of the Emperor of Mankind's genetic artistry, the ultimate guardians who have protected the Master of Mankind since the earliest days of the Imperium. These genetically-enhanced warriors transcend even the legendary Space Marines in their physical capabilities, mental acuity, and unwavering loyalty, serving as both the Emperor of Mankind's personal bodyguard and the final line of defense for humanity's most sacred sites on Terra.

Warriors who surpass even Space Marines in combat ability and loyalty

Unlike the mass-produced Gene-seed implants used to create Space Marines, each Custodian is individually crafted through a unique process that takes decades to complete and requires the direct involvement of the Emperor of Mankind's own genetic expertise. This painstaking creation process results in warriors who are not merely enhanced humans, but living weapons of unparalleled perfection, each one a masterwork of biological engineering that represents thousands of years of accumulated knowledge and skill.
The Golden Legion, as they are sometimes known, has maintained an unbroken vigil over the Imperial Palace for over ten millennia, their presence a constant reminder of the Emperor of Mankind's continuing protection of humanity. Clad in ornate auramite armor and wielding weapons of incredible craftsmanship, each Custodian is capable of single-handedly defeating entire squads of lesser warriors, their combat abilities enhanced by centuries or millennia of constant training and battle experience.
The organization is led by Shield-Captains, veteran Custodians who have proven themselves through countless battles and demonstrated the tactical acumen necessary to lead their brothers in the most challenging conflicts. These commanders coordinate not only the defense of the Imperial Palace, but also the rare occasions when the Custodes venture forth from Terra to address threats that require their unique capabilities.
The Custodian Custodian Vehicles represent some of the most advanced war machines in the Imperium's arsenal, from the swift Coronus Grav-Carriers to the mighty Telemon Heavy Dreadnoughts. These vehicles are not merely tools of war, but works of art that reflect the Custodes' dedication to perfection in all things, combining devastating firepower with the aesthetic beauty that befits the Emperor of Mankind's personal guard.

Masters of the void who project Imperial power across the galaxy

The Imperial Navy commands the void between stars, maintaining the Imperium's dominance across the galaxy through superior firepower, tactical expertise, and an unwavering commitment to protecting humanity's interests in the vast darkness of space. As the master of space-borne warfare, the Navy protects vital trade routes, transports Imperial forces to battlefields across the galaxy, and wages devastating ship-to-ship combat against humanity's countless enemies.

The largest military formations in human history spanning five Segmentum fleets

Organized into five mighty Segmentum fleets, each responsible for defending vast swathes of Imperial space that encompass thousands of star systems, the Navy operates vessels ranging from nimble escort ships and swift destroyers to massive battleships capable of cracking continents with their orbital bombardments. The Gothic, Solar, Tempestus, Pacificus, and Ultima Segmentum fleets represent some of the largest military formations in human history, their combined strength measured in millions of vessels and billions of crew members.
The Navy's arsenal encompasses a staggering variety of weapon systems designed to project Imperial power across interstellar distances. Devastating lance batteries can slice through enemy armor with focused energy beams, while massive macro-cannons hurl building-sized shells that can level cities or cripple enemy vessels. torpedo spreads launched from battleship-sized launch bays can cripple entire enemy fleets, and nova cannons can destroy targets from ranges measured in astronomical units.
The command structure of the Imperial Navy reflects the Imperium's feudal nature, with Lord Admirals wielding enormous power over their assigned sectors while remaining answerable to the High Lords of Terra. These fleet commanders must balance the competing demands of exploration, defense, transportation, and offense while managing resources across distances so vast that communication can take months or years to reach its destination.
Working in close coordination with the Astra Militarum and Adeptus Astartes, the Imperial Navy provides crucial orbital bombardment support, atmospheric air support through specialized attack craft, and the massive logistics network that keeps the Imperium's far-flung forces supplied and reinforced. Without the Navy's control of the void, the Imperium would fragment into isolated pockets of human civilization, easy prey for the Xenos, Chaos forces, and other threats that prowl the darkness between the stars.

Noble houses whose feudal traditions span millennia of loyal service

The Imperial Knights are towering war machines that stride across battlefields like walking gods of destruction, piloted by noble Knight Houses that have served the Emperor of Mankind for millennia with unwavering loyalty and dedication. These feudal warriors represent a unique fusion of ancient tradition and devastating technology, their massive bipedal war engines embodying both the chivalric ideals of their knightly orders and the awesome destructive power required to defend humanity against its greatest threats.
The great Knight Knight Houses trace their lineages back to the Dark Age of Technology, when their ancestors colonized distant worlds and established feudal societies centered around these magnificent war machines. Each Knight Houses maintains its own distinct heraldry, customs, and sacred Machine Spirits that have been passed down through countless generations of noble pilots, creating a rich tapestry of martial traditions that spans the entire galaxy.

Walking gods that embody chivalric ideals and devastating firepower

The feudal structure that governs Knight society is both ancient and essential to their continued effectiveness, with complex oaths of loyalty binding individual Knights to their Barons, Barons to their High Kings, and the Knight Houses themselves to either the Golden Throne or the Forge Worlds of the Adeptus Mechanicus. These bonds of fealty ensure that when the Imperium calls, entire households of Knights can be mobilized to bring their devastating firepower to bear against humanity's enemies.
Imperial Knights follow ancient codes of chivalry and honor that govern their conduct both on and off the battlefield, creating warriors who are not merely pilots of powerful war machines, but exemplars of the noble ideals that once guided humanity during its greatest achievements. These codes emphasize duty, honor, protection of the innocent, and loyalty to the Emperor of Mankind above all else, creating a warrior class that serves as both a military force and a moral example.
The bond between Knight and pilot transcends mere mechanical interface, representing a spiritual communion between human consciousness and ancient Machine Spirits that has been cultivated over generations of the same bloodline. This hereditary connection ensures that each Knight suit responds to its pilot with an intimacy and precision that cannot be replicated through training alone, creating a symbiotic relationship where pilot and machine become extensions of each other's will. The Throne Mechanicum that interfaces pilot with Knight contains the accumulated memories and experiences of all previous pilots from the same family line, creating a living legacy of martial knowledge and noble wisdom.
The Armour Patterns of Imperial Knights represent millennia of technological development and refinement, from the versatile Questor Imperialis patterns to the specialized Cerastus and massive Dominus-class war engines. Each pattern serves specific battlefield roles while maintaining the essential characteristics that make Knights such formidable opponents: towering size, devastating weaponry, thick armor protection, and the noble spirit of their pilots who guide these god-machines into battle.

The demigod sons created to lead the Emperor's Legions in the Great Crusade

The Primarchs were the twenty superhuman sons engineered by the Emperor of Mankind beneath Terra to serve as the supreme commanders of His Adeptus Astartes Legions during the Great Crusade. Each was conceived as a demigod—a being whose physical might, intellect, and psychic potential dwarfed even the Space Marines created from his gene-seed—and each was tuned to embody a different facet of the Emperor's own soul, a perfect warrior-king fashioned to help reclaim a galaxy lost to mankind during the long darkness of the Age of Strife.

The Horus Heresy set brother against brother and broke the Imperium forever

That design was shattered before it could be realised. While the infant Primarchs still slumbered in their gestation capsules, the four great powers of Chaos reached into the gene-vaults through the Warp and scattered them across the galaxy, hurling each to a distant and often brutal world. The Emperor was forced to build His Legions from gene-seed cultured from sons He could not find, waiting through centuries of warp-storms before the Great Crusade could finally be launched to reunite Him with His lost children.
When the reunions came, they were not the controlled unveilings the Emperor had once planned but accidents of war and chance, each son shaped by the alien culture that had raised him. The Imperium officially acknowledges only eighteen Primarchs; two—the IInd and the XIth—were expunged from every record in an act of memetic erasure so total that nothing certain survives of their names, their Legions, or their fates, a state secret enforced at the highest levels of the Adeptus Terra.
The fragile reunion of father and sons collapsed in the Horus Heresy, when Horus Lupercal, the favoured Warmaster, fell to the corruption of Chaos and turned half his brothers against the Emperor. Nine Primarchs remained loyal and nine became traitors—a near-perfect symmetry of glory and ruin. The civil war ended with Sanguinius slain aboard the Warmaster's flagship, Horus Lupercal destroyed by the Emperor's own hand, and the Master of Mankind interred upon the Golden Throne, alive but maimed beyond healing.
Ten thousand years later, the Primarchs still define the Imperium. Every loyalist Space Marine chapter descends from one of their gene-lines and carries the temperament of its progenitor, while the traitor Primarchs persist as immortal Daemon Princes who launch their Black Crusades from the Eye of Terror. In the Era Indomitus, two of the lost sons have returned to lead humanity once more: Roboute Guilliman, revived to serve as Lord Commander of the Imperium, and Lion El'Jonson, emerged from ten millennia of concealment—proof that the age of the demigods is not yet over.
