Erebus

First Chaplain of the Word Bearers, Architect of the Heresy

A Word Bearers Dark Apostle preaching the dark truths of the Chaos Gods

Erebus, First Chaplain of the Word Bearers Legion, is remembered across ten thousand years as the single individual most responsible for lighting the fuse of the Horus Heresy. A Colchisian priest whose shaven scalp bears the tattooed passages of the Book of Lorgar, he moved through the Great Crusade not as a warrior first but as a manipulator of extraordinary patience, always a half-step ahead of the men and Primarchs he meant to break. Long before the Legion's discovery he had already mastered the old faith of Colchis, and he wielded that inherited certainty like a weapon no blade could match, reading every rival's doubt as easily as scripture.
It was Erebus who, together with Kor Phaeron, steered the Word Bearers back toward the old faith of Colchis after the Emperor of Mankind humiliated Lorgar at Monarchia, and it was Erebus who later stole the anathame from the Interex and arranged for Horus to be wounded by its blade on the moon of Davin. The Warmaster's subsequent "healing" in the Davinite serpent lodges was in truth his corruption, the single act from which the Heresy's entire tragedy unspooled. Erebus spent the following years seeding secret warrior-lodges through Legion after Legion, turning brotherhoods of war into vectors of treachery, and helped orchestrate the massacres at Istvaan and the Battle of Calth. Few conspiracies of the Heresy unfolded without his hand somewhere in their making, and fewer still ever traced their ruin back to him.
Ten thousand years later, Erebus endures as a Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers, still scheming from the Legion's fortress-world in the Eye of Terror, locked in perpetual rivalry for mastery of its faith even as Lorgar Aurelian himself withdraws into contemplation. He remains what he has always been: the quiet hand behind the galaxy's greatest catastrophe, content to let others take the blame for a ruin he alone designed. Even those who despise him concede the scale of what he accomplished: a mortal priest, unaugmented by any Primarch's blood, who bent Legions and daemons alike to a war of his own making.
