Merek Grimaldus

Merek Grimaldus is Reclusiarch of the Black Templars, the senior-most Chaplain of a Chapter built entirely around unending war in the Emperor's name. A protégé of the High Chaplain Mordred and veteran of a score of Crusades, Grimaldus was elevated to his master's rank by High Marshal Helbrecht on the very eve of the Third War for Armageddon, a promotion he accepted doubting he could ever fill Mordred's place. By then he had already led Black Templars crusading fleets across a dozen war-torn sectors, a record of unbroken zeal that made Helbrecht's choice of successor obvious to everyone but Grimaldus himself.

Those doubts burned away in the ash and fire of Hive Helsreach. Leading barely a hundred Black Templars against Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka's Ork invasion, Grimaldus made his final stand at the Temple of the Emperor Ascendant, vowing to the last defenders around him: "I have dug my grave in this place, and I will either triumph or I will die." The temple collapsed upon them all under the weight of the Ork assault, and a full day later, Grimaldus crawled alone from the rubble, carrying the temple's last relics into the light.

That single act transformed him, in the eyes of an entire hive world, into the Hero of Helsreach: a living symbol of Imperial defiance carried always into battle alongside the Cenobyte Servitors that bear those same salvaged relics. In the years since Helsreach he has carried that same unbending faith to other broken Chapters in their darkest hours, lending his counsel wherever the Emperor's light burns lowest. To the people of worlds far beyond Armageddon, Merek Grimaldus is no longer merely a Chaplain of the Black Templars, but proof that faith, however battered, can still walk out of the wreckage on its own.
